“Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why have you become disturbed within me? Hope in God, for I shall again praise Him For the help of His presence.”
Psalms 42:5
“Have you realized that most of your unhappiness in life is due to the fact that you are listening to yourself instead of talking to yourself? Take those thoughts that come to you the moment you wake up in the morning. You have not originated them but they are talking to you, they bring back the problems of yesterday, etc. Somebody is talking. Who is talking to you? Your self is talking to you. Now this man’s treatment [in Psalm 42] was this: instead of allowing this self to talk to him, he starts talking to himself. “Why art thou cast down, O my soul?” he asks. His soul had been depressing him, crushing him. So he stands up and says, “Self, listen for moment, I will speak to you.”
― Martyn Lloyd-Jones
I finally get it after all these years!
Mom used to say when I was little “Sit your “self” down!

Thanks, Crissy! We need to talk Scripture to ourself rather than listen to our own fears and anxieties.
p.s. my wife said she no longer wants to listen to MLJ as one of our daily preachers so I must do so on my own. MLJ is too “in-depth” for her.

Not everyone likes MLJ, some find him hard to understand. I listen to one of his sermons almost every morning, )Still in the Book of John chapter one.). Took me a little while to be at home with his preaching, now I learn so much from the wisdom God gave him.
Have a blessed day Tom.

Yes, MLJ is definitely not “breezy” listening as he THOROUGHLY exegetes, verse by verse.
Thank you, Crissy, and have a blessed evening!

I bought his Spiritual Depression book in the fall of 2019 and when I read that quote I felt the weight of the world come off my shoulders. Such wise counsel! As soon as I started reading this my breath got caught in my throat! I totally needed this reminder today! Thank you, Crissy!!!! Love and blessings!!!

A good point about listening vs talking to oneself, MLJ has some insights!

I am so glad I found this quote form MLJ, It spoke to me in a good way as I talk to myself all the time . Now I know I am being Biblical. 🙏
